Complex Neuromuscular Conditions: Physiotherapy in Central London

Specialist neurological physiotherapy for people living with a neurological or neuromuscular condition, focused on mobility, strength, balance and the everyday tasks that matter to you.

Complex Neuromuscular Conditions

Understanding neurological and neuromuscular conditions

Neurological and neuromuscular conditions affect how the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles work together. They include recovery after a stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, peripheral neuropathy and the effects of a neurological injury. Symptoms vary widely, from weakness and stiffness to poor balance, fatigue and difficulty walking.

Physiotherapy works alongside your medical care to help you move, stay strong and stay independent. The focus is on mobility, strength, balance and reducing the risk of falls, alongside managing fatigue so you can keep doing the things you value.

Carly is a Specialist Physiotherapist in neuro rehabilitation with more than 10 years of experience with complex neurological injuries. Sessions are one to one through physiotherapy, at UNTIL Marylebone, Canary Wharf or Soho, and she works alongside your GP, neurologist and wider medical team.

Neurological physiotherapy can help you to:

Walk with more confidence

Practice and strengthening for walking, turning and stepping, plus advice on any walking aid, so getting around at home and outside feels steadier.

Feel steadier and lower my risk of falls

Balance training matched to your condition and ability, with practical changes that reduce the chance of a fall in everyday life.

Keep my strength up

A progressive strength programme set at the right level for you, adjusted as your condition and energy levels change from week to week.

Manage my energy through the day

Fatigue is common with many neurological conditions. Pacing and planning exercise around your energy helps you stay active without paying for it the next day.

Keep doing the things that matter to me

Goals are set around your life, whether that is getting to work, managing stairs, playing with grandchildren or returning to a sport you enjoy.

Which neurological conditions can physiotherapy help with?

  • Stroke, where rehab supports walking, arm use, balance and everyday tasks during recovery

  • Multiple sclerosis, with work on strength, balance, walking and managing fatigue through the day

  • Parkinson's disease, with exercise for walking, balance, posture and larger, more confident movement

  • Peripheral neuropathy, where reduced feeling or weakness in the feet and hands affects balance

  • A brain or spinal cord injury, once the acute medical phase has passed

  • Other neuromuscular conditions affecting muscle strength, with exercise matched to your energy levels

What happens at your first assessment?

Your first session is a full hour with Carly. She takes your history, asks what you need to get back to, then screens how you move, how strong you are and what the problem area is doing under load.

You leave with a working diagnosis in plain English, the first steps of your plan, and a clear idea of how progress will be measured.

Assess

Physical screening and performance testing to find what is limiting you. Carly takes a full history, examines how you move and load, and measures where it matters, so the plan starts from numbers rather than guesswork.

Plan

A programme built around your goals, your sport and your calendar. You leave knowing what is driving the problem, what you are going to do about it, and how progress will be measured from one session to the next.

Build

Coached sessions and progressive loading, adjusted as you improve. Strength, control and conditioning are built in stages, with the load moved on only when the last stage has been earned.

Return

Back to sport and racing, with objective measures to prove it. The decision to return rests on retesting against your own baseline, so you go back with evidence rather than a feeling.

Neurological physiotherapy
questions

Can physiotherapy help with a long-term neurological condition?

Yes. Physiotherapy works alongside your medical treatment to help you stay as strong, mobile and independent as possible. Work on balance, walking, strength and fatigue management is recommended across many neurological conditions, and the plan is adjusted as your needs change over time.

When should I call 999 instead?

Call 999 straight away if you notice signs of a stroke: the face dropping on one side, weakness or numbness in one arm, or slurred or confused speech. Also call 999 for any sudden new weakness, loss of vision or severe headache. Physiotherapy comes after urgent medical care.

She has more than 10 years of experience with complex neurological injuries, first in private neurological rehabilitation hospitals and then in community-based rehabilitation, and she works alongside each person’s GP, neurologist and wider medical team where that helps.
